You started playing Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles or plan to and now you want to buy you first Champions. What to buy? What to prioritize? Grimguards got you covered, here how to make your first purchases in a budget!
Mini Budget (30$)
With such a limited budget you’ll have to go at the essential and just try to cover what the Ethereals don’t cover for you, which is why I would prioritize an Inquisitor (allows to purge all buffs in enemy team) and a good frontline (Paladin or Warden) as Ethereals already cover pretty all most areas of Damage.
Example of a good Budget Inquisitor:

Why is it good? (In order of prioritization)
Element: Water | The Water Variant of Inquisitor not only deals AoE Damage and Purge all positive effects on enemy team, it also pulls forward the enemy backline, potentially exposing them to a deadly chain of attacks ! |
Faction: Corporation | Will limit the use of enemy Fire and Nature moves that may risk to trigger your reaction, exposing them to again another time the move we speak about just above. |
Stats | Decent Initiative, good Physical Power and Ok HP + Magical Power. The Champions is well rounded and will deal good blows on the backline with its weapon while having enough Magical Power to not just tickle with the AoE. |
Additional Support Options | Its Faction Skill Exposition Protocol is a fun one to use and very versatile. Will allow to buff defensively your Backline and send it to your frontline, which as you will start learning the game you will see how insane of a skill it is and the various possibilities it opens. |
I don’t find an Inquisitor like that, how do I know which one to pick?
Element | Any is good but Techno, Water, Fire, Darkness and Air will give interesting side effects |
Faction | Try to prioritize Tribe, Empire, Cult, Undying or Corporation. In any order. |
Weapon | Avoid weapons that rush forward such as Spatha or Greataxe. Magical Weapons are usually better such as Scepter or Spellbook. Crit weapons such as Blunderbuss or Crossbow will do the trick too and last resort, you can always turn to Dagger or other fast Attack options. |
Stats | The Highest Initiative the best, then I’d recommend having some HP (around 66 or 70+) and for Damage the most important is the stat used by their main weapon, so if you have a Blunderbuss, 21 Physical Power is better than 21 Magical Power. Try to avoid Inquisitors that don’t have at least 18 Power in their main weapon stat or less than 14 in Magical Power. |

Alternative Link in case Price for those requirements become a bit too pricey. These ones will be slightly worst but still good and very playable.
Max Price you may want to pay for your first Inquisitor: 15$
Example of an excellent Budget Paladin:

To be honest I was even amazed that I found this at this price. You may usually need to pay 2-3x that price for a similar stats Paladin. But this also shows that If you are a bit more patient and check the Marketplace regularly enough you may find some really good gems that will power-level you through the ranks for really cheap!
Why is it good? (In order of prioritization)
Element: Nature | Frontliners of the Elements Nature, Techno and Darkness provide the advantage of coming with an integrated self Heal which is always handy to keep your Champion alive. While Order or Techno Paladins also offer defensive stats when they use their Taunt ability. |
Faction: Cult | Prioritize Kingdom, Guardian or Cult on your Frontliners. Eventually you can use Undying or Corporation as well. |
Stats | Has more than 10 Initiative which is an absolute must have on most frontliners combined with a very good HP Pool of 92! You really want a minimum of 86 HP on your frontliners. |
Additional perks | The fact that this Paladin can also apply a DoT on the opponent and heal itself while occasionally also getting its Reactive skill to provide a small heal and Initiative to your entire team makes it an incredible toolbox for starters. |
Exactly the same reasoning and requirements are applied to Wardens.

Max Price you may want to pay for your 1st Paladin/Warden: 15$
Bonus Picks
Now Ideally you got these first 2 Champions for less than the absolute max price I recommend. So you should have some extra, so what i’d recommend you do is you go to this Marketplace Link It will show you all the Champions with these stats sorted by lowest price first.
HP | 72+ |
Initiative | 10+ |
Physical Power | 23+ |
This will allow to find a versatile Champion to add to your Roster and options. For this very limited budget guide I chose to recommend a Physical Attacker as Filler since it will be more versatile than a Magical Attacker which can be stronger but more situational.
If you already got all 3 Champions suggested above and still have some remaining $ you may want to click to this Marketplace Link for a good and cheap Magical Attacker. Make sure it has one of the following Weapons: Scepter, Spellbook, Voodoo Doll or Mystical Horn.
Small Budget 60$
If you have a budget of around 60$ you may want to not only get what we detailed above but also hunt for some better and most reliable ones ! For example you could expand a little bit the budget allocated to the Damage Dealers but what you absolutely must not overlook is the Importance of a good Defensive Purge !
Choose your first Good Defensive Purge
First of all, what is a Defensive Purge ? How to get one ? What are the best ones ? Let’s cover all this for you.
A Defensive Purge is how we’ll call any Skill that has as property « Remove all Negative Effects » and applies to your entire Team. Here is a list of the Champions that can have this property:
- Light Shaman
- Light Druid
- Any Mystic
While Druid and Mystic will give you a one time Heal, Shamans on their hand will give a Heal over Time that applies in between each turn. Both have their use cases but for you for now, Let’s just make sure you have at least one of these.
Example of a good Budget Defensive Purge:

Why is it good? (In order of prioritization)
HP | The worst thing you can have in this game is a Support Champion that your Opponent can take out in just one Hit. With 90HP that shouldn’t happen on this Mystic even with a Break. |
Faction: Corporation | Will limit the use of enemy Darkness and Air moves that may risk to trigger your reaction, Granting you a Heal + Purge AoE for free. |
Initiative and Elem Power | 13 is a pretty good Initiative for a Support and the fact this Champion is mostly magically oriented makes it an excellent choice for a Healer. |
Additional Support Options | As a Corporation Champion it has the possibility to also buff defensively your frontline to help it survive. |
I don’t find a Defensive Purge like that, how do I know which one to pick?
Element | Any is good for a Mystic but Light is mandatory in the Shaman or Druid case. Water Mystic is a bit more situational and hard to use so I would not recommend as the sole Defensive Purge in a small wallet. |
Faction | Try to prioritize Corporation, Guardian or Undying. |
Stats | The Highest Initiative the best, then I’d recommend having some HP (around 80+) and for Damage the most important is the stat used by their main weapon, so if you have a Blunderbuss, 21 Physical Power is better than 21 Magical Power. Try to avoid Druids or Mystics with less than 15 Magical Power to keep their Heal relevant. Shamans don’t have that limitation, just go for what it uses as main Weapon. |

Max Price you may want to pay for your first Defensive Purge: 10$
Opposing Positionning Disruption Option
Next thing you’ll want is to make sure you have Opponent’s movement options like Repulse, Wave Crash, Zephyr’s Pull, Arcanist or Scientist so that you can access the Important damaging Champions from your Opponent rather than losing your time trying to get through their 110HP Paladin.
You really don’t need to be too specific about this, just make sure you have a Water, Order, Air, Scientist or Arcanist around in your options. Even better if you have that in one of the previous roles we spoke about and Bonus points if it has good Initiative.
I’d like more Champions, What do I buy next?
If you want more Champions here is what I would focus on next:
- More of what we covered above but with different Factions or Elements
- More offensive Magical options
- Have Fun trying and experimenting new things! The above roster already covers most of the areas of play you’d want to play around so everything else is a nice bonus to have.
